Oh yeah

Happy Yom Kippur. Atone well, and enjoy your irrationality (not that I don't have irrationalities as well, just not that particular one).
And, enjoy this lion video.

Changes over a Decade

It turns out to not be just a figure of speech to say that Bush is demented. Scary. But well worth 4 minutes of your time.

Outcome bias perhaps?

Channeling Taleb, The Knackered Hack decides that a company took a risk and it turned out badly, therefore management was stupid.
Speaking of Taleb, my opinion of him is split. He does have some interesting things to say. He is also an idiot (see here). Also, anyone who can put as the first things one sees on his homepage are a picture of himself and a quote about "teasing people who take themselves...too seriously", while telling us that he was afraid of airplanes and such because his ideas are so important for the world that he had to get his book finished before anything happened to him (and so on, see Mahalaobis for more), either needs to look in the mirror, or needs to stop staring at it.

I don't really have a lot to add to what others are saying today. I do find it odd that there was no indication whatsoever that I saw around NYC that today was the 6th anniversary of the attacks. Not sure what I was expecting, just that there would have been something.
Anyway, I want to keep this a positive blog (mostly), so enjoy this video prank, and go back through the site's archives for the previous pranks in the series if you enjoy it.

Must see TV

I hate his style, but Keith is dead on (via Catallarchy, via Balko). Spread the word.

So, Jude Wanniski is an example of how supply-side economics isn't important in the Republican party because he "was kicked out of the party in disgrace"? So, the fact that he very vocally and very correctly disagreed with the Iraq invasion, and so was shunned by some, means the unrelated ideas he championed, and that are still at least given lip service to, aren't important? Riiiight.
Update: Nice takedown of the piece that Megan is responding to.

A pretty good interpretation of how Monopoly would have been played if it had been invented in the USSR (ht: TP). (Not the original is all that free market-like).

Why oh why

Do people continue to put trust in government?
Off topic, but from same site, don't eat local for environmental reasons. Do it if it makes sense for you given cost, quality, convenience, etc. Doing it for the environment reduces certain effects, but greatly increases other ones. As usual, the lesson is that the price system contains more information in it than you might think.
