NBA Predictions 2021-22

Honestly, don't feel like I have a great handle on this year, so punting on it. I would take NYK over 41.5, but not counting it towards my record either way. Leaning to Nets over Lakers in Finals (bleh).

Last year went 2-3 (what an embarrassment OKC was to the league with that shit), bringing overall record to 26-15.

Feel real good on Milwaukee, Washington and Memphis

Review of record: NBA top picks record was 24-12 before last year. Not really sure how to count the 6 picks I made. Of the overs, 1 (OKC) was already over when things shutdown, Miami was very likely to be over, and Atlanta was certain to be under. Of the unders, New Orleans was nearly certain to be under, Indiana was very likely to be over, and Houston was probably going under but it was close. Generously to me, that’d be 4-2, but I’m not counting it in my overall count. Make of it what you will.

NBA Playoffs 2019 III

Round 1
All 8 series correct, with 2 in the right number of games.

Round 2
All 4 of the series correct, 2 in the right number of games.

Round 3
#1 Milwaukee Bucks vs. #2 Toronto Raptors. Bucks are too good. Bucks 4-1.
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #3 Portland Trailblazers. Durant being out opens the door, but I think the champs pull it out. Warriors 4-3.

Finals
Bucks 4, Warriors 1. Giannis, shooters, and defense. And either no Durant or limited Durant.

NBA Playoffs 2019 II

Round 1
7 or 8 of the series correct, pending Denver winning tonight. 1 or 2 of those in the right number of games (again pending Denver). I think I was right to say not to overlook Orlando, but wrong to think Utah could do well against Houston/in the playoffs.

Round 2
Eastern Conference
#1 Milwaukee Bucks vs. #4 Boston Celtics. The C’s look better, but not enough. I’m upgrading them to 30% chance of winning the series. Bucks 4-1 (but closer than that).
#2 Toronto Raptors vs. #3 Philadelphia 76ers. I could easily see it going strongly one way or the other, but I think Toronto got their act together more. Raptors 4-3.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #4 Houston Rockets. The question is if GSW is slipping, or if they just slipped a bit against the Clips. I’m sticking with the 3 out of 4 champs. Warriors 4-3. One of these will be the West champs.
#2 Denver Nuggets vs. #3 Portland Trailblazers, or #3 Portland Trailblazers vs. #7 San Antonio Spurs. Portland has handled the loss of Nurkic better than I expected, though helped by OKC not playing well. This will be the worst series of round 2, by quality of play. Trailblazers 4-2 over (probably) Denver, or 4-1 over San Antonio.

Round 3
#1 Milwaukee Bucks vs. #2 Toronto Raptors. Bucks are too good. Bucks 4-1.
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #3 Portland Trailblazers. Warriors 4-1.

Finals
Bucks 4, Warriors 3. Giannis, shooters, and defense.

NBA Playoffs 2019

Very chalky, but will try to identify where upsets might come.

Round 1
Eastern Conference
#1 Milwaukee Bucks vs. #8 Detroit Pistons. Maybe the Pistons get 1, probably not. Bucks 4-0.
#2 Toronto Raptors vs. #7 Orlando Magic. People are dismissing the Magic; they shouldn’t. This is my series with the greatest combination of no one expecting it and the chance of an upset. Raptors 4-3.
#3 Philadelphia 76ers vs. #6 Brooklyn Nets. I’m not buying the D’Angelo Russell hype train this year (he’s better, not close to All-Star level), but this is almost a perfect opponent for him. Philly could be champs because of their top 5’s firepower, or could go out early due to the lack of depth and how teams can adjust their defense much more in the playoffs for the matchup. 76ers 4-3.
#4 Boston Celtics vs. #5 Indiana Pacers. I want to believe the Celtics have figured it out, that Gordo is >90% back, that the Smart injury will help make the rotations better. TBD. Meanwhile the Pacers look a lot like the 2018 Celtics. Celtics 4-3.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #8 Los Angeles Clippers. The Warriors get sloppy once. Warriors 4-1.
#2 Denver Nuggets vs. #7 San Antonio Spurs. Experience vs. talent. I think the talent gap is too big, but don’t be shocked. Nuggets 4-3.
#3 Portland Trailblazers vs. #6 Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder looked like a really contender for a while, but I don’t see it anymore. Unfortunately, PTB lost its big guy, so this will be competitive. Trailblazers 4-3.
#4 Houston Rockets vs. #5 Utah Jazz. Probably the best round 1 series. Key will be if Gobert can defend in space, and if someone else steps up for Utah offensively. Rockets 4-3.

Round 2
Bucks 4, Celtics 1. If the Celtics really have it together (23% chance), they win in a tough 6 or 7.
Raptors 4, 76ers 1. Could see Lowry sinking things, though.
Warriors 4, Rockets 3. Rockets will probably be better than last year, but Warriors won’t take them lightly.
Nuggets 4, Trailblazers 3. Eh.

Round 3
Bucks 4, Raptors 3. But not really this close, kinda like Bos-Atl in 2008.
Warriors 4, Nuggets 1. Would be very surprised if anyone but Warriors or Rockets wins the West.

Finals
Warriors 4, Bucks 3. Great series.

NBA Playoffs 2017

Basically chalk again this year. As usual, I’ll give my predictions for all 4 rounds now, but you should only take my current round predictions even half seriously.

Round 1
Eastern Conference
#1 Boston Celtics vs. #8 Chicago Bulls. The Bulls ended the season well, but I don’t see it. Celts 4-1.
#2 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #7 Indiana Pacers. Cavs a little too complacent to get the sweep. Cavs 4-1.
#3 Toronto Raptors vs. #6 Milwaukee Bucks. Raptors have best shot to take down the Cavs in East, but Giannis wins at least one. Raptors 4-1.
#4 Washington Wizards vs. #5 Atlanta Hawks. Probably a boring 7 gamer. Wizards 4-3.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #8 Portland Trail Blazers. GSW takes care of business. Warriors 4-0.
#2 San Antonio Spurs #7 Memphis Grizzlies. Too bad fear the bear doesn’t rhyme, and that Memphis doesn’t have enough anymore to make it a series. Spurs 4-1.
#3 Houston Rockets vs. #6 Oklahoma City Thunder. Probably the top 2 MVP vote getters facing off. Expect a close one. Rockets 4-3.
#4 LA Clippers vs. #5 Utah Jazz. The hardest one to call, but I think the Clips at their best are better, and I expect them to be that or close to it. Clippers 4-3.

Round 2
Eastern Conference
Celtics 4, Wizards 3.
Cavaliers 4, Raptors 2.
Western Conference
Warriors 4, Clippers 1.
Spurs 4, Rockets 3.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
Cavaliers 4, Celtics 1.
Western Conference
Warriors 4, Spurs 1.

NBA Finals
Warriors 4, Cavaliers 2.

NBA 2016 Finals

Got both conference finals winners right. So 11-3 picking series winners so far.

NBA Finals

Golden State Warriors with home-court against the Cleveland Cavaliers. A much better matchup this year than last, and wouldn't be shocked by either team winning. However, the Warriors are a bit better 2-3, and 4-12, and it's arguable whether Bron or Curry is better (no question on MVP, of course, but that's a regular season award). Add in home-court, and I'm going West. Warriors 4-3, for the repeat.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland Cavaliers against Toronto Raptors. Easy peasy. Cavs 4-1.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #3 Oklahoma City Thunder. Another great series in the West. Don’t sleep on OKC. Warriors 4-3.

NBA Finals

NBA Playoffs 2016, Round 2 (part 2)

Still have them losing to Cleveland 4-1.

NBA Playoffs 2016, Round 2 (part 1)

The Western Conference will start up before the East wraps, so will post what I can now. Still chalk.

Round 2
Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #4 Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks are pretty good, the Cavs are excellent. Cavs 4-1.
TBD vs. TBD
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #5 Portland Trail Blazers. With Curry it’d be a sweep. With him out, probably they drop 1. Warriors 4-1.
#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #3 Oklahoma City Thunder. San Antonio is the better team, but I like how OKC matches up. It’ll be a close one. San Antonio 4-3.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland Cavaliers against TBD. Cavs 4-1.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #2 San Antonio Spurs. Warriors 4-3.

NBA Finals
Golden State Warriors with home-court over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Warriors 4-3.

NBA Playoffs 2016

I wish I had a contrarian take on this year’s playoffs, but I think it’ll be largely chalk. As usual, I’ll give my predictions for all 4 rounds now, but you should only take my current round predictions even half seriously.

Round 1
Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #8 Detroit Pistons. The Cavs are vulnerable, but I don’t see it against Detroit. Cavs 4-1.
#2 Toronto Raptors vs. #7 Indiana Pacers. Indy finished the season strong, but that was largely schedule-based. Love PG, but the Raps are better. Raptors 4-1.
#3 Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Hornets. I continue to doubt the Hornets a bit, though they are clearly much better than I gave them credit for (who knew Marvin Williams would become good?). Heat 4-3.
#4 Atlanta Hawks vs. Boston Celtics. Should be a great series. I’m a bit biased, but I have to admit the Hawks have largely owned the C’s. Hawks 4-3. Go Celts.
Western Conference
#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #8 Houston Rockets. Only question is if it’s a sweep. Warriors 4-0.
#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #7 Memphis Grizzlies. Spurs 4-0.
#3 Oklahoma Thunder vs. #6 Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle is a much better coach, but I don’t see it. Thunder 4-1.
#4 Los Angeles Clippers vs. #5 Portland Trail Blazers. Will be interesting to see how Blake plays. Clips 4-3.

Round 2
Eastern Conference
#1 Cavaliers vs. #4 Hawks. Cavs 4-1.
#2 Raptors vs. #3 Heat. Raps 4-3.
Western Conference
#1 Warriors vs. #4 Clippers. Warriors 4-1.
#2 Spurs vs. #3 Thunder. Either 5 or 7….I’ll go with Spurs 4-1.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
#1 Cavs vs. #2 Raps. Cavs 4-3.
Western Conference
#1 Warriors vs. #2 Spurs. Been saying for a while whoever had home-court would win this. Warriors 4-3.

NBA Finals
Warriors with home-court against the Cavs. Warriors 4-1.

NBA Predictions 2015-16

Take with the usual grain (or bucket) of salt.

NBA 2015 Finals

Got both conference finals winners right. So 12-2 picking series winners so far. It's been kind of a chalky year. Anyway....

NBA Finals
Golden State Warriors with home-court against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was impressive how the Cavs managed to dominate the Hawks even with all their injury problems. And I think the team 3 thru 12 is solid. Not great, but solid. If Irving was 100%, it would be interesting. If Love was playing, it'd be a tossup. As is, I'm split on whether to go 5 or 6. I feel like Bron can defend his hometurf, but also thinking that the Cavs just won't have enough wrinkles to their offense when going up against the best defense in the league to win twice, let alone 4 times. I'm hoping for a good series, but Warriors 75-80% likely to win it. Warriors 4-1.

NBA Playoffs 2015, Round 3

Posting this slightly late, but on my honor I knew what I wanted to say before the first game started, and haven't changed it at all.
In round 2 got all series winners correct.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
#1 Hawks against #2 Cavaliers. Would not be shocked if the deeper team pulled it off, especially with Irving looking gimpy. I'll stick with the best player on the planet, though. Cavaliers 4-2.

Western Conference
#1 Warriors against #2 Rockets. I give Houston a slim chance. The Warriors had their scare, and now are firing on all cylinders. The high volume of 3's on both sides increases the variance, and maybe Dwight can dominate on D, but I doubt it. Warriors 4-1.

NBA Finals
Warriors with home-court against the Cavaliers. Easy call. Too bad, would have been interesting with both teams healthy. Warriors 4-1.

NBA Playoffs 2015, Round 2

A mostly lackluster round 1, but Clips-Spurs was just as good as it was supposed to be. Disappointing to see the Love injury, which opens the door wider to Bulls and Hawks, but still see Cavs making the Finals. Being blown out, but making them. Got 6 series winners right, 2 in right number of games. We'll just pretend Mavs series didn't happen....
Onto Round 2.

Round 2
Eastern Conference
#1 Hawks against #5 Wizards. Playing Pierce at the 4 has helped the Wiz quite a bit, and the Hawks didn't look great against Brooklyn. However, it seems like Hawks were getting together by end of the series, and did win all of their home games. Not quite convinced by Wizards, would need to see it again. Hawks 4-3.
#2 Cavaliers against #3 Bulls. Would not be shocked if the Bulls' size enables them to win this series. However, the Bulls are inconsistent, and the Cavs still seem a little better. Cavs 4-3.

Western Conference
#1 Warriors against #5 Grizzlies. I give the Griz a small chance, due to their way of matching up with people being so different. However, most likely it will be a rout. Warriors 4-1.
#2 Rockets against #3 Clippers. Should be a great series. Hopefully Chris Paul's injury heals quickly. Given how it looks now, though, Rockets 4-2.

Round 3
Eastern Conference
#1 Hawk against #2 Cavaliers. Sticking with the LeBrons. Cavs 4-2.

Western Conference
#1 Warriors against #2 Rockets. If Howard keeps it up, this could get very interesting...but probably won't. Warriors 4-1.

NBA Finals
Warriors with home-court against the Cavaliers. Go with the team having the historically great year. Warriors 4-1.
